So Long September! Hello October!

Greetings!

Wow! It's hard to believe that a month has already flown by!

Ms. Tracey from Beach Bus came to Russell to help us learn and practice bus safety! What a perfect addition to our story "The Little School Bus."

Last week, we got to celebrate American Indian Heritage Day with the help of the
MCPS Indian Education Department.

First, we got to play some games in the gym. They would have been outside games - except it was too smoky! We learned that long ago, children played lots of different and fun and creative games inside and outside because they didn't have computers or game stations.

Then, we got to go outside to look at and sit inside a teepee. 80 kindergartners fit inside! WOW! A Crow storyteller told us the Crow story of how the teepee came to be. It was an interesting and special story about how animals came to help a young, injured boy.

Then, we got to create our own teepees. We learned that each tribe has a special reason for thinking about the teepee the way that they do. We decided to add art that shows something special to us on the outside of our teepees.

Last, we got to visit with Cecil Crawford, a local artist. He worked with all 80 kindergartners, and taught them how to draw different several things.
Each child was successful and left knowing that he/she was an artist!

We are very thankful for the time, talents and stories that the volunteers shared with us!
We are lucky kids!

Bring on OCTOBER!
